Vineyards
The 2013 Bona Fide Pinot Noir is produced from a single vineyard in the Hemel en Aarde Valley areae of Walker Bay. This single site is characterised by heavy clay and decomposed shales.  The heavy soils create stress for the vines resulting in a wine of great concentration and flavour while maintaining freshness and elegance, typical of the Hemel en Aarde area.

Vintage information
A very wet late January and early February led to delayed ripening and extended hang times. The wines are wonderfully aromatic with high natural acids and great fruit concentration.

Vinification
Fermentation occurred spontaneously with no commercial yeasts added. 40% of the grapes were fermented as whole clusters, with the rest de-stemmed but left intact as whole berries. Total time on skins was four weeks after which the wine spent 11 months in French Oak barriques.

Tasting Notes
Darker and more intense than any other Crystallum Pinot. The heavy soils create stress for the vines resulting in a wine of great concentration and flavour while maintaining freshness and elegance typical of the Hemel en Aarde area. Bright cassis and cherry notes, with spice and a slight smokiness that lead to a rich and generous palate with supple fruit and full, grippy tannins. Integrated and ready to drink, but will improve into 2020.
